What should I expect?
Arrive 5 minutes early so we can fill you in on everything you need to know about your sauna experience.
We recommend arriving with your swimwear on, so you don’t loose valuable sauna time!
Use the sauna for 10-15 minutes, followed by a cooling off period either in the vintage bath or sitting outside. You can choose to use the sea but this is AT YOUR OWN RISK and SHORELINE SAUNA is not LIABLE In any way.
Access to the sea is via the sandy beach so please bring sea shoes or flip flops if you prefer. Entering the sea is at your own risk. Please see our T&C’s before booking your sauna session.
Please note - customers are not allowed to operate the stove (it is extremely hot!). You are allowed to ladle water onto the stones, using the equipment provided. You’ll be told how to do this.
How hot does the sauna get?
The sauna is typically 75 to 85 degrees Celsius.

What should I bring?
A swimsuit to wear in the sauna (if booking a private session, you're not required to wear a swimsuit in the sauna, however, you are required to 'cover up' once out of the sauna and during the cold element of the session).
• A small towel, to sit on while in the sauna and a towel to dry yourself.
• A water bottle to stay hydrated while in the sauna.
• Flip flops, or wetsuit shoes, for easier access to the sea although as sandy not totally necessary.
• A Dryrobe or overhead bathrobe are useful for changing.
Please note, we do not have showers on site. In summer there are showers on the beach close by.
Please do not bring your jewellery… it’ll get very hot, so it’s a good idea to leave it at home. Make sure your swimsuit doesn’t have any metal fastenings, as this can also burn the skin.
We have a small changing area, so you may want to come with your swimwear underneath your clothes.

Is summertime a good time to sauna?
Yes … sauna is for all year round.
Apart from the obvious health benefits (relaxation and stress reduction, cleansing and detoxification, strengthening the immune system, cardiovascular health, connection to nature and yourself, belonging to a sauna community amongst others), taking saunas in the summer creates a acclimatisation effect of the body to the ambient heat.
By taking regular saunas in summer, the body can develop a better tolerance to the heat. The habituation effect makes you feel generally more comfortable in the summer heat and better able to cope with high temperatures.
Can I come on a rainy day?
Yes! We think wild windy, rainy days are some of the best sauna days.
It’s the perfect rainy day activity in Lyme Regis. Remember, we also have the cold water bath for cooling off.
-
What are sauna hats used for?
The felt sauna hat is the traditional way of cooling the head, face and hair during sauna bathing.
It can be used 'dry' to reflect the heat away from your face and head, or the sauna hat can be soaked in water and worn during the sauna. The water evaporates cooling your head and allowing cool water to refresh you whilst you sauna.
Sauna Whisks
Sauna whisks can be made from many different twigs (collected in summer to remind you in winter of summer fragrances). Our selection varies, but typically we use birch, oak and herbs.
The whisks are used for moving the hot air around the sauna and as a tool for massage. Different woods have different health benefits associated with the different species. To see whisk usage in action take a look at this video

What does ‘Leil’ mean?
Noun. Estonian Origin. The steam generated by pouring water onto the hot rocks in the sauna.
Essential Oils
Further awaken your senses with the introduction of essential oils to your sauna. Select 3 oils from our selection available on the day . Add 2-3 drops of your chosen essential oil to a ladle of water (not the bucket) before pouring over the hot stones. Please refrain from using the oils towards the end of your session for the sake of our next guests. Please do not bring your own products to use in the sauna without permission.
Selection of oils is subject to change. We are not aromatherapy practitioners, use of oils in the sauna is recreational and at your own risk.

Is it ok to burn wood?
All of the logs for our wood-fired stove are locally sourced from sustainably managed woodlands. They are all kiln dried with a mooisture content of less than 20%.
The stove is extremely efficient, operating to strict German requirements (BimSchV II). It burns much more effectively than an average household wood burner so emits far less pollutants.
A wood-burning sauna is the most authentic sauna experience, and is a considerably better use of energy than it’s electric equivalent in these circumstances.
For more information on the environmental impact of our wood stove please visit the Huum UK distributor website to find out more.
